Chapter 11

JACKIE

Typical Katya, at first, she tells me she’s coming to Vegas, then she tells me she’s not coming, and then she shows up unannounced. I wasn’t counting on her anymore, but I could use her here tonight to clear my head.

The whole situation with Mary is making me insane. She seems to take an interest in me, then leaves. After that, she gives me a kiss that leaves my knees weak and leaves again. In the morning, gets mad at me for no reason, leaves me breathless with a wonderful fuck in her dressing room, and leaves again. Shit, this girl is complicated as hell.

On top of that, I’m not sure if I’m ready to move forward with this if there is anything between us. My heart tells me that I should try to have a stable relationship, that it might be worth it. On the other hand, my head sends me constant reminders of the damage done to me by curious heterosexual women. And surely, her family thinks I should burn in hell or that I’m the devil’s envoy.

I rarely let people get close to me, but I’ve found that my heart always ends up breaking into a thousand pieces when I do. That hurts. Then I string together months of writing ballads about broken hearts that end up forgotten in a folder on the computer.

As Katya and I discuss where to go out tonight, the sound of knuckles on the suite door interrupts us. Since I’ve started taking better care of myself, I’m having a hard time keeping up with Katya, and I don’t want to end up in some mess in the middle of recording the TV show.

When I open the door, I am shocked to see none other than the Princess of Nashville standing in front of me. To my surprise and delight, she doesn’t even say “hello” to me. She lunges for my lips, and I lose my breath in the passion of the kiss. Then, she takes my breath away when she turns away and says something about being sorry as she leaves the suite.

I swear this back-and-forth about whether she wants me or not is driving me crazy. But I can’t help being drawn to her. It’s the story of my life, then she’ll leave once the TV show is over, and I won’t see her again.

Still in her underwear, Katya approaches me and says, “I thought your so-called relationship was just a farce.”

I sigh. “I don’t know what it is anymore,” I admit with resignation.

My friend smiles. “That kiss was genuine, and I could swear that some tears were falling from her green eyes before she turned around and left.”

“I swear I didn’t do anything to her,” I answer quickly, raising my hands in a defensive gesture. “I don’t understand what’s going on.”

Katya rolls her eyes and throws a pillow at my head. “You’re so clueless, Jacqueline.”

“And what the fuck is wrong with you now?”

“Think a little, you not being very smart,” jokes my friend.
